Zoning Permits

Did you know the City of Fort Benton requires you to have a permit for any structural work that is done on residential or non-residential property? This includes, but is not limited to, fences, additions, new construction, concrete (sidewalks, driveways, etc.), storage sheds, and decks. This also includes any demolishing of buildings, additions, concrete or patios, etc..

Please contact Fort Benton’s Zoning Official prior to starting your project. Fort Benton’s Zoning Official will discuss set backs, property lines, etc. with you. Once he has done so, the Residential Building Permit or Non-Residential Planning Permit will need to be completed and returned to City Hall. Payment is due at the time of filing the form. Prices vary with different projects.

**You need to contact the the Montana Department of Labor and Industry for all work being completed on a non-residential building. This includes: Commercial Building Permits, Electrical Permits, Plumbing Permits, Mechanical Permits, Elevator Permits and Boiler Permits You can visit their website at https://ebiz.mt.gov/licenses/Default.aspx

Residential Building Permits and Non-Residential Planning Permit applications need to be completed and turned into City Hall prior to work beginning.


Business License

Thinking of doing business in Fort Benton? You will need to complete a business license and pay the necessary fee. Fee’s paid are based on calendar year, January to December.

Fees are dependent upon type of business and resident or non-resident.

Dog Licenses

Did you know any person owning, keeping, harboring, or having custody of any dog over four months of age within the city limits must register their dog annually with the city clerk. Did you also know that City Ordinance states that you cannot have more than TWO dogs per household? You can pick up a dog license at City Hall or at the Dedman Foundation. Fee’s paid are based on calendar year, January to December.

Dog License fee is $10 per dog / per year.

Special Event Permits

Did you know in order to have a special event on the City property you need a special permit? City property includes, but is not limited to, the walking bridge, the levee, the park, gazebo, and cook shack. Events include, but are not limited to, weddings and reunions. Please be sure to read and complete the application in its entirety. If you plan on having liquor available at your event or if your event attendance is over 25 people, the City requires a certificate of insurance showing proof of liability and/or liquor liability insurance prior to events approval. Additional information and documents may be requested depending on the event.

Please submit your completed application and fee a minimum of 45 days prior to your event to allow processing and approval. Park Committee has final approval on all events.

Special Permits cost $50 per event.
